Why Stock Screen Doors Fail in Older Hollywood Homes (and What a Custom Measure Fixes)

Taylor Hancock • September 15, 2026

Out of square openings, sagging frames, and the custom fit that finally closes the gap

Every week, someone walks into our showroom with a receipt from a big box store and a photo of a screen door that will not close. They measured once, bought the closest size on the shelf, and spent a Saturday fighting it. The door rubbed at the top corner, left daylight along the latch side, and let mosquitoes in through the exact spot it was supposed to seal.

Their effort was never the problem. The house was. Much of Hollywood was built between the 1910s and the 1930s, long before door openings followed modern sizes, and a century of settling has pulled many of them out of square. That is why stock swinging screen doors so often fail here, and why Tashman Home Center builds custom swinging screen doors for Hollywood homes to fit the opening as it exists today.

The Short Answer

Stock screen doors are made in nominal sizes such as 32 by 80 inches and assume a square, plumb opening. Older Hollywood homes rarely offer either. Settled framing, stucco returns, and uneven thresholds cause gaps and binding. A custom measure records the opening at several points so the door is built to fit.

Why Older Hollywood Openings Rarely Fit a Stock Door

Most original Hollywood homes were framed by hand, and each opening was built to suit the house rather than a catalog. Decades of soil movement and earthquakes have added their own adjustments. When we measure an older entry, we commonly find these conditions.

  • The hinge jamb leans a quarter inch or more over its full height.
  • The head jamb dips in the middle, so the opening is shorter at center.
  • The opening is wider at the top than at the bottom, or the reverse.
  • A tile stoop or sloped threshold leaves one bottom corner higher than the other.

Spanish Colonial Revival homes add another challenge. Many set the entry door deep inside a thick stucco return with no flat wood casing, so a stock door has nothing solid to mount to.

Five Ways a Stock Swinging Screen Door Fails

Each failure traces back to a door built for a square opening being forced into a non-square one.

  • Uneven gaps. Daylight shows along one edge because the opening tapers. Insects find that gap fast.
  • Binding at the top corner. A sagging head jamb means you must lift or shove the door to close it.
  • A latch that misses the strike. When the latch side is not parallel to the hinge side, wind pushes the door open.
  • A dragging bottom rail. An uneven threshold scrapes the sweep until it wears through.
  • A racked frame and torn mesh. A flexible frame forced into shape separates at the corners within a season or two.

Small gaps matter more than most homeowners expect. In a recent press release on the overlooked openings behind pest invasions, Tashman Home Center pointed to gaps as small as a quarter inch. As Kenny Tashman put it, "A screen can look perfectly usable and still fail at the one place that matters."

What a Custom Measure From Tashman Home Center Checks

A custom measure is an on-site evaluation of the opening, not a single tape reading. Our team follows the same sequence at every Hollywood home.

  1.  Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom, and record the smallest reading.
  2. Measure the height on the hinge side, the center, and the latch side.
  3. Measure both diagonals, since a difference reveals a racked opening.
  4. Identify the mounting surface, including wood casing or a stucco return.
  5. Check the threshold for height, slope, and material.
  6. Confirm swing direction, clearance, and the best hinge side and closer location.

We then build the door to the opening we measured. Our frames are extruded aluminum with double-strength corners, offered in seven finishes with grille series such as El Dorado, Tahoe, Santa Fe, and Protecto. Because the door fits, our swinging screen door installation team never has to force a corner to close it.

What Custom Sizing Costs in Hollywood

A standard aluminum swinging screen door with professional installation typically runs $450 to $700 in Hollywood. A decorative grille brings that to about $700 to $1,000. Custom sizing for a settled or nonstandard opening adds roughly $150 to $350, and a built-in pet door adds $150 to $400.

A stock door may cost less at the register, but in an older home it often means a second door and more mesh within a few years. A custom screen door replacement commonly lasts fifteen to twenty-five years with basic care.
